Frequently Asked Questions
Will the chimney need lining?
Generally, yes, but it depends on the flue construction. A professional survey will determine this.
How much approximately does it cost to install a Rayburn Heatranger?
This will depend entirely on site requirements. A profession site survey will be required with any
Heatranger installation.
How much does a Rayburn cost per year to run compared to a normal cooker?
Fuel costs are similar. Refer to published fuel consumption comparison chart. Again, there are many
variables, such as lifestyle, usage, model and system design. Bear in mind that the presence of a
Rayburn in the kitchen will possibly eliminate the need for a radiator there, and its space warming
feature is an important plus point.
What warranty comes with a new Rayburn and what does it cover?
3 years and 12 months labour. Certain components are chargeable consumable items and will need to be
replaced at service intervals. Refer to guarantee documentation. Optional extended warranty covering
labour costs is available.
Does the boiler have an extra warranty on Heatranger models?
Yes. 5 years parts warranty.
Will we need another cooker for the summer?
With the 400 series, probably not, as it can turned on during cooking periods only.
Will my children be safe when a Rayburn is in operation?
A Rayburn is generally safer than most conventional cookers as there are no naked flames or very hot
electric elements to touch. It's controls are also hidden away. Although the 'body' of a Rayburn is
hot to the touch, its surface temperatures are not likely to cause significant injury and children soon
learn to avoid hot objects. However, as a general safety matter, children should not be allowed to play
with a cooker or its controls or to interfere with fires or burners.
What happens in a power cut when a Rayburn is in use?
Solid fuel models, as well as the 208G, 200K, 208K, 300K and 309K will continue to provide cooking
and DHW. The 368K has a manual override lever to also provide cooking and DHW during power cuts. All
Rayburns will go into safe mode when the electricity supply is interupted and should automatically
restart when it is restored. None of the 400 Series, nor the 200G, will operate during a power cut.
What is the noise level from a pressure jet burner in a Rayburn?
Compares favourably with any other pressure jet applianceand is probably quieter than previous generations
of range cooker. Actual sound level readings (i.e. decibels) are pretty meaningless, due to other site
factors such as property location and environment. Conventional flue models will generally be quieter
than balanced flue, particularly if appropriate flue pipe materials are used. Balanced flue models are
quieter in the actual kitchen but may create more noise at the vent outside. Noise acceptability is very
subjective and therefore it is recommended that potential customers are invited to hear the product
running and then make their own judgement.
Do you make a gas balanced flue Rayburn?
Not at present, but there is a power flue option for the 400G.
Do I have to leave my Rayburn on all the time?
Traditional models are designed for continuous operation and are adjusted to provide the required
temperatures. Rapid Response models are designed to be able to be turned on and off as required and heat
up fast. If required they can also be operated on a special low setting to give a gentle warmth to the
kitchen.
Will a Rayburn keep my kitchen aired and cosy?
Yes. A Rayburn gives off warmth into the kitchen. As there are two basic groups of Rayburn - traditional,
continuously burning models and the new generation Rapid Response models - obviously the latter will
only provide warmth during the period when they are programmed to be on.
Is it better to have a cooker only Rayburn and a separate central heating system?
In some instances this might be the preferred option, especially if you want a different fuel for cooking
and heating. It will depend on the design of the property and installation. Lifestyle also plays a part.
The Heatranger 400 Series is designed so that the cooker and central heating burners are controlled
separately.
Can I cook without running the central heating?
Yes. All twin burner models have separate burners for the ovens and the boiler.
Can you control the water temperature separately to the ovens>
Yes, with the 400 Series. Separate burners are used for the ovens and boiler repectively.
Do you make a left hand flue model because our chimney is on the left?
No. Right hand only. Where a chimney is not located conveniently, a balanced flue or power flue model
might be more appropriate.
Can you time the ovens to come on and off?
Yes, with the 400 series. 440, 460, 480 & 499K have an integral programmer. 400 models have an
integral one-event timer, but can be fitted with an optional external programmer. 480G/AL (CF) models
may be fitted with an external programmer. Even the 200G could be fitted with an external timer.
How many radiators can a Heatranger run?
It depends on radiator size/shape/output and heating requirements of the property, but typically:
440 = 8, 460 = 12, 480 = 16, 499 = 20. To some extent it will also vary according to domestic hot water
demands.
Would you recommend we have a radiator in the kitchen with a Rayburn?
A Rapid Response model may be turned off for a long periods and therefore alternative heating might be
required in the kitchen. With other models it depends on the size of the kitchen, but it probably won't
be necessary. If a radiator is installed, it should be fitted with a thermostatic valve, to compensate
for the possible varying heat outputs of the Rayburn due to the various cooking operations carried out.
Do you get domestic hot water for free with a Heatranger?
No. There will always be an increase in fuel consumption to generate hot water. A Rayburn can be a
means of providing economic domestic hot water, dependant on the type of system fitted, particulaly
with the continuously burning traditional models - 212S, 208K, 308K, 208G.
Does the Rayburn require clearance at the side?
It depends on the model. In general, 200 & 300 series do, but 400 series don't. Please refer to
Rayburn Technical at www.aga-rayburn.co.uk
How about the pipe work?
The cooker is intended to go flush with the wall, unless the wall is of combustible material, when there
should be a gap of 25mm. Water and fuel pipes come out of the side of a Rayburn and should avoid
travelling around the back of the cooker.
Does the Rayburn have to be positioned against a wall?
No. With the introduction of a power flue, gas fired and oil fired Rayburns can now be installed in locations
previously considered impossible, in virtually any position in the kitchen, including island and
peninsular settings.
